Return To Me
(Matthew Ryan)
from Matthew Ryan’s “Regret Over The Wires”
tabbed by Mike Berry
Capo 1
[G] [Em] [D] [C]
[G]Slowly walkin’ down the street
Where the homeless and the lovers meet
The [Em]bars glows blue
Your skin does too
I saw the [D]garland, in the skyline, in the [C]by-line
I [G]took a drink, I took the pills
You’ll murder me, I know you will
Still I’m [Em]wishin’, that I could change this
That you would [D]open
I keep hopin’….for a [C]cure, for some medicine
Just one conversation
[G]I can’t return to you
You must return to [Em]me
That’s the deal
I’m [D]sorry….did I say I’m [C]sorry?
I’m sorry.
[G] [Em] [D] [C]
[G]In a verse where all is flat
You hunker down and relive the past
You’re [Em]leaving soon, It’s ten ‘til noon
I see a [D]black car, I’m moving through tar
When we’re a[C]part
[G]I have been the worst of kind
A sorrowed heart and a cluttered mind
And I’m [Em]thinkin’…that I could change this
That I could [D]change this…but I can’t [C]change this
[G]I can’t return to you
You must return to [Em]me
That’s the deal
I’m [D]sorry….did I say I’m [C]sorry?
I’m sorry. I’m sorry.
[G] [Em] [D] [C]
[G]I can’t return to you
You must return to [Em]me
That’s the deal
I’m [D]sorry….did I say I’m [C]sorry?
I’m sorry. I’m sorry.
[G]Did I say I’m [Em]sorry
Did I say I [D]miss you?
I’ll do what I [C]have to…do

I Can’t Steal You
(Matthew Ryan)
from Regret Over The Wires
tabbed by Mike Berry
I think this is pretty close. With slightly fuzzy sound, and a few added hammer ons it sounds pretty good. Any corrections welcome.
capo 3
[Am] [C] [F] [Am] [F] X 2
[Am]Hold yourself I’m [F]done
My arms are [C]tired [F]
[Am]Saw you walking [F]backwards
Towards the [C]fires [F]
I’m in love with a [Am]red sky [C]
I’m in love with a [F]tragedy
We’ll betray what we [Am]can’t deny
Cause I believe she [F]needs me
[Am]Caught a flash of…
[F]Absolute per[C]fection [F]
[Am]Shattered light fell [F]dark
In all [C]directions [F]
Traffic floats like a [Am]ballet [C]
Far below in the [F]distance
Just as sad as the [Am]words we’d say
It’s all gone in an [F]instant
It’s just so [Am]easy, it’s [F]hard
It’s just so [Am]easy, it’s [F]hard
[Am]Pull me closer [F]
[C]I can’t feel you [F]
You’ll [Am]have to trust me [F]
[C]I can’t steal you [F]
[Am] [C] [F] [Am] [F]
[Am]Ashtrays lie like [F]hearts
For you to [C]burn in [F]
[Am]Smoke curls from your [F]mouth
Before you [C]turn in [F]
Our love is a black gun
I feel the loss in the [F]mundane
In the hours, the minutes run
They’re just so subtle but they [F]have their way
It’s just so [Am]easy, it’s [F]hard
It’s just so [Am]easy, it’s [F]hard
[Am]Pull me closer [F]

Trouble Doll
(Matthew Ryan)
from “Regret Over The Wires”
tabbed by Mike Berry
Capo 1
[E] [F#m] [E] [F#m]
[E]Trouble doll, you look so pretty when you’re sad
And the laughs that we had have turned to [F#m] madness
[E]Lovers come to call and you’re voice gets soft
In the painted glass behind your [F#m]lashes
Though angels [A]pray for you
Only the blues could [F#m]save you
If [E]only for a second in the shimmering light
When the night’s collapsed, but it don’t shatter [F#m]or sting
It’s a [E]porcelain song from marionette in a dangerous sway
As if under God’s [F#m]own strings
Salvation watches [A]over you
Redemption only [F#m]borrows you
A little at a time in this (b)world
Real [F#m]gone, real [A]gone girl [E] [F#m]
[E]Standin’ high above on that bridge in St. Charles
Tell the truth, love, whose death did you [F#m]see?
All the [E]art on the wall and the quiet down the hall
Send a sinking feeling to a different [F#m]story
My lonesome [A]prays for you
In hours when there’s [F#m]only you
Well the [E]ghost of a drink on the counter by the sink
Is smeared, warm and full of empty [F#m]promises
It’s a [E]well-worn poem where the words stick together
But the meaning seems numb, ‘til the morning [F#m]washes
All down and [A]over you
Heartache sure [F#m]owes you
All the happiness in this (B) world
Real [F#m]gone, real [A]gone girl [E][F#m] [E] [F#m]
Sha la la a little light (repeated along with [E] and [F#m])

Capo 2
The song seems to start with a suspended G chord, from which the finger on the high E is then pulled off, so:
[Gsus] = 3X0002 then 3X0000 (I’ll call this last chord GsusE, because I don’t know it’s real name)
[D*] is X00230…because (again) I don’t know it’s real name, and it’s late at night
[Gsus] [GsusE] [D] [D*] [Em] [C]
We lived a [G]little while
On Long [D]Blvd
We stood [Em]side by side
Light [D]years apart
I [C]swear, I’ll be your [D]summer
I’ll [G]never [D]let you [C]fall
Until the words [D]forever
Mean [G]nothing no more
[D]Nothing to me at [C]all
We were [G]two of a kind
You were the [D]pretty one
You hid your [Em]heart in mine
Now it’s all [D]I ever want
I [C]swear, I’ll be your [D]answer
I’ll [G]come there, [D]if you [C]call
Until the last [D]disaster
Means [G]nothing no more
[D]Nothing to me at [C]all
It means [G]nothing no more
[D]Nothing to me at [C]all
[G] [D] [Em] [D]
I hold you [G]closer now
Closer than I [D]ever did
I always [Em[thought somehow
We’d find the pieces [D]that were hid
I [C]swear, I’ll be your [D]ransom
I’ll [G]come there, [D]if they [C]call

Means [G]nothing no more

Intro: [Em] [G] [D] [C] X 2
Well you sent me [Em]running
For cover, deep in those [G]dark and lonely hallways of my [D]heart
and there were problems
You said there was something [C]wrong with me
And they were deep-[Em]seated, they were deep-rooted
I must've pushed 'em [G]away, I pushed 'em away
So you left with the [D]impression that if I could just clear my head
You'd be [C]back with me one day
But [Em]now you walk the roads with a [G]rose in your teeth
Walking arm in [D]arm with him, it's hard to believe

I saw Matthew play this song. He uses only three chords….all variants on an E chord. He’s so damn talented that he doesn’t need to use a whole bunch of fancy-schmancy chords like a lot of other songwriters do.
Capo up 1
E= 022100 E/A= X02100 E/F#=202100 (or try it like this 202200….can’t decide which I prefer)

There’s only [E]one light on in the house
And that’s the [E/A]light up in the hall
And it’s [E/F#]shining on the back of my head
And I’m [E]concentrating hard on the [E/A]cigarette
To the ashtray from the [E/F#]ashtray back to my lips
So I[E] lean up from my easy chair
I [E/A]rub my three-day beard

Since my [E/A]heroine jumped the guardrail
And [E/F#]decided who she wanted to be once more
Now [E]every night I’m paralyzed
By the [E/A]fear of rope burns and morning light
[E/F#]And the smell of wet cement
Since I became irrele[E]vant[E/A] [E/F#][E][E/A][E/F#]
Now [E]memory is just a flash flood
A [E/A]thick and black sticky mud
And [E/F#]heartache it’s like a breaking bone
It was always[ E]twelve hours on a missionary line
[E/A]I think I would’ve spared some time
But I didn’t [E/F#]I never went home
Now it [E]occurs to me like blinds undrawn
Or a [E/A]bullet from a shotgun
[E/F#]That she knew long ago what it meant
To feel irrele[E]vant [E/A] [E/F#]

Lights of the Commodore Barry

From May Day

Capo 2
[D]I saw the lights of the Commodore Barry
From the deck of the ghost of the flower street ferry
[G]And I felt the shock of an [A]atom bomb
When the [D]tired old city of [A]Chester
Was [Em]draped and dying in my [A]arms
[D]For a while I was lost under the weight of remembering
Of how the sun would warn the projects some mornings
[G]When the birds were falling like winter's [A]frozen rain
And I was [D]all fingers numb holding a [A]brown paper lunch
[Em]Twelve years old and already [A]ashamed
[D] [G] [A] [D] [A] [Em] [A]
[D]Now soon I was floating over Highland Avenue
By my side was the Red Cross, the Pope and the President too
[G]Yeah I had returned like I [A]swore I would
To [D]right some wrongs and [A]sing my song
And [Em]share the luck that every man [A]should
[D]But when the fever broke and I awoke from the dream
I was passed out beside a jukebox siphoning gasoline
[G]When my brother yanked me hard from the [A]corner bar
And carried my [D]drunk bones [A]all the way home
[Em]Draped and heavy in his [A]arms

Ok I know there really isn't all this guitar in there, but this makes it so you can play it with just 2 guitars. Guitar 1 plays all the chords, while Guitar 2 plays all the Riffs. I dont have an electric so I couldnt figure out all of guitar 2s part, I just kind of merged them together.

Capo 3
On the CD, Matthew plays the intro, middle instrumental part and outtro with the 4 chords (ie, the [C], [G], [Am] and [F]) in an alternating way, dropping his little finger down on the "G" note of the 6th string. That is, he plays the [C] alternating with [CaddG], which is X32003; then the [G] alternated with [G6] which is 320000; then [Am] alternates with [Am7] which is 002213; then [F] (which is played in these three places as an [Fmaj7]=X03210) alternating with [FaddG] which is X03213....if you listen to the CD this may make a little sense.

The last song on "Mayday"..beautiful and sparse. This is my best approximation as this is really a piano song. But, you can kinda fool around with it with these chords, and it still sounds lovely.

Capo 2.....I also find that if you play it without a pic and use your finger nail on your pointer finger as a pic it sounds alot like the cd.....make sure to do a little picking and hammer on here and there. The song is basically just three chords except the bridge......Great Song!!!!

Your hair fell from you onto my forehead
And the light came through the shade and laid on the bed
My arms they wrestled your inventions
While my heart was still wrestling with my head
Yes my heart still wrestles with my head
Barefoot on the hardwood in the kitchen
Barefoot in the frontyard on the grass
The summer it is setting with its stitches
This love is stronger than any that has passed
CHORUS
But time and time only knows the answers
That time and time only can reveal
Yes time and time only knows the answers
That time and time only can steal
Yes time and time only can...steal

Then the wind surrounded me and I surrendered
It was beautiful, it was vile and I bent
But when all the new familiars they had vanished
It was only you and your skin that was left
Yeh only you and your skin was left
Now the days they are unwinding like an alarm clock
And the drift it is as steady as it is strong
And that's me fumbling with the key to your padloc
And you knew it, ah, you knew it all along
Yeh I knew it, you knew it along

From what I can figure, this is a pretty basic G and C song, only you muck
around a bit and lift a finger off the chords every so often. It's probably
completely wrong, but it doesn't sound too shithouse to me.
In the [G]house of the lie we were [C]living,
You lost your [G]tongue, and in my touch I lost all [C]feeling
I saw the sun falling small on your shoulder
I lit your smoke, we barely spoke, the days got colder
I took my things to a flat in the suburbs
I put your ring in the folds of a long verse
Now your blue scarf, your green eyes, the great sadness
They often dwell, recall, and swell a wild tempest
Chorus
I can't [G]hold you, but I'm still [C]kissing you
I don't [G[want to, but I'm still [C]missing you
[G]Still, still
I carry [C]you still, I guess I always [G]will
In these hours that unwind with such effort
Amid this hoax that swirls and floats on the weather
Some hearts get numb 'til they become frozen hopeless
But this I swear, I will live there beyond this slowness
I feel my sleep on the verge of some bright dream
Where all is well, and cherry light warms a dark street
There your hand will fall to mine, safe with comfort
And there your lips will rise to me 'til they whisper
Chorus
Worry
(Matthew Ryan)
from Matthew Ryan’s “East Autumn Grin”
tabbed by Mike Berry Mberry9@cs.com
OK…here goes…it’s a piano tune, and I may have mangled this in attempting to make it guitar accessible. Anyway…you’d have to do a drop D tuning if you want to get the nice bass notes like on the CD……if you do the drop D tuning (where the 6th string is tuned down to a D note), then the [D] chords are played as 0xx232, and the [E] is played as 222100 (I repeat, the 6th string is tuned down to D if you’re playing it this way). It’s easier to play with conventional tuning, and just do something like hum the nice bass note, or get a cellist to hit it for you. A beautiful song. If Matthew happens by here, I invite him to correct any and all errors in my tabs.

This is a stripped down version?there's lots of bass stuff going on I
haven't addressed. And a few of the words are questionable. Any assistance is appreciated.

Well…a lovely song. I’m not sure about the [A]..sometimes sounds like he’s playing it as

A lovely song from Matthew Ryan. A favorite of Acoustic Brad’s, I understand. I haven’t included the picked bass line, which is relatively simple to make out. Some might find it easier to play capoed up 4, and playing [C] [F] [Dm] [Am] instead of [D] [G] [Em] [Bm]. A personal preference, but beautiful either way.

Trouble Doll
By Matthew Ryan
Transcribed by Sean Slone
Capo on 3rd Fret
Verse 1:
D
Trouble doll you look so pretty when you’re sad
D – Em
And the lives that we had that turned to madness
D
Love has come to call and your voice gets soft
D – Em
In the painted glass behind your lashes
G
Though angels pray for you
Em
Only the blues could save you
Verse 2 (same chords)
If only for a second in the shimmering light
When the night’s collapsed but it don’t shadow still
It’s a porcelain song from a marionette
In a dangerous swing as if on the gods’ own strings
G
Salvation watches over you
Em
Redemption only borrows you
A
A little at a time in this world
Chorus:
Em-G-D
Real gone… Real gone girl
Verse 3:
Standing high above on the bridge at Lake Charles
Show the truth, love. Whose death did you see?
All the art on the wall and the quiet down the hall
Sent a sinking feeling to a different story
My lonesome prays for you
In hours when there’s only you
Verse 4:
Well the ghost of a drink on the counter by the sink
Is smeared, warm, and full of empty promises
It’s a well-worn poem where the words stick together
But the meaning seems numb till morning washes
All down and over you
Heartache sure owes you
All the happiness in this world

A sparingly-picked song. the [E] is played throughout most of the song using only the 3rd string as the bass note. I designated with [E*] where the 2nd string is also used. The [A] chords are played with the 2nd string as the bass, and the [F#m] is played with the 1st string as the bass note. And by 1st string, I mean the low "E".

Autopilot
Words and Music By Matthew Ryan
From Concussion 2001
Saw Matthew play this in Cleveland and am pretty positive the riff is correct..the rest of the song is my crapshoot at it.
Capo 3
Main Riff for verses, relevant to capo...FINGERPICK THIS BABY!
E------------------------------------
B-----0-------0--------0-------0-----
G--------0-------0--------0-------0-- Rinse and Repeat.
D------0-------0--------0-------0----
A---2-----s>3------s>5-----s<3-------
E------------------------------------
Play that over all the verses...
just slide your middle finger up and down the A string like shown above. Listen to the song for timing. The C in the chorus sounds good if when you finger pick you move from C to Cmaj-032000 then hammer back to C. Or you can just play Cmaj the whole time...sounds just as good. I can not reinforce enough how cool this song sounds if fingerpicked right, using the same type of pattern above. Good Luck!
(Verse 1)
Where is my Autopilot?
I hope he did not forget about me,
I need my autopilot,
to handle what confounds me.
(Verse 2)
Where is my autopilot?
I wish to shut me down,
Without my autopilot,
I'll surely burn-out.
(verse 3)
This world is tearing at you,
this world wants to see you fall,
Most times the only thing that you can do,
Is keep your head and whisper, after all.
(verse 4)
This world is only a moment,
This world never made no sense,
So take the lint from your pocket,
And offer it like a sacrament.
(chorus chords)
My Autopilot,
My right hand man,
My Autopilot,
I know you understand.
(verse 5 )
Where is my Autopilot?
I hope he did not forget about me,
I need my autopilot,
Oh right, now that reminds me.
(Verse 6 )
I killed my Autopilot,
He wasn't doing me any good,
I warned my autopilot,
I might one day...if I could.
(Chorus chords)
My Autopilot,
My right hand man,
My Autopilot,
I hope you understand.

This sounds fairly good. I'm not sure about the [Em7] which I'm playing as X2203X. Let me know if there's something that sounds better.
capo 4
[Am]Me and [D]Amy went for a [Em7]ride
Just after the [G]rain last [Am]night
When some[D]thing I couldn't put my finger [Em7]on
Made me lift off the [G]gas and turn out the[Am]headlights
Glidin' [D]'neath those stars
Past those [Em7]shining Belleview [G]houses
And their [Am]foreign cars
I could feel [D]my heart [Em7]beat when Amy [G]lit a cigarette
And put her hand on my knee
And I said "[C][G][Am]Angel, [C]I'm [G]sad and I don't know [Am]why
But with [C]you by my [G]side I'm [Am]nearly satis[F]fied....[G]an[Am]gel...[G]an[Am]gel"
[Am]Then I [D]thought to myself
Me and [Em7]Amy, [G]we'd be in the [Am]clear
If I could just [D]rob one of these lucky [Em7]bastards
[G]High-tail it out of [Am]here
Now when the [D]car stopped I was [Em7]restless
[G]We were just below the [Am]rise
[D]I could feel my lungs [Em7]breathe
[G]When my Amy started to cry
And I said "[C][G][Am]Angel [C]It's [G]sad but you know we [Am]try
Stay [C]here in the [G]car While [Am]I go in[F]side...
[G]an[Am]gel...[G]an[Am]gel [G]An[Am]gel....[G]an[C]gel..."
[C] [G] [Am] x 2 [C] [G] [Am] [C] [Am]
[Am]Now it couldn't of [D]been ten minutes
[Em7]When I came out to [G]find what really went [Am]down
It was the [D]smell of burnt rubber, [Em7]gasoline,
Amy's per[G]fume And the silence [Am]all around
And it was the [D]feel of broken [Em7]glass....under my [G]feet
And in my [Am]head No it [D]shouldn't have been [Em7]Amy
[G]It should've been me instead
And I said "[C][G][Am]Angel [C]I'm [G]sad now I know [Am]why
Cause with [C]you by my [G]side I was [Am]nearly satis[F]fied...
[G]an[Am]gel...[G]an[Am]gel [G]An[Am]gel...[G]an[C]gel

The chords sound better as barre chords, and the second guitar part sounds something like:

Somebody got murdered

Somebody's dead forever
And you're minding your own business
Carrying spare change
You wouldn't cosh a barber
You're hungry all the same
I been very tempted
To grab it from the till
I been very desperate
But not enough to kill
Somebody got murdered
His name cannot be found
A small stain on the pavement
They'll scrub it off the ground
As the morning crowd disperse
No-one says that much
Somebody got murdered
And it' left me with a touch
Somebody got murdered
Somebody's dead forever

Capo 2.
[Bm]Early in the morning when you're still shaking
And all you want is to come [G]down
[Bm]When you're so pale and your heart is growling
And all virtue seemed to have [G]drowned
[D]When all you've given [A]and all you've stolen
[Em]Kneel down at your [G]side
[D]When all that seemed mended [A]shows itself still broken
[Em]And you're feeling swallowed [G]alive
[Bm][Bm/A]Shake the [G]tree
[Bm][Bm/A]Shake the [G]tree
[Bm][Bm/A]Shake the [G]tree that sleeps in you
And [Em]breathes in me
[Bm]Now in your writing when you're so desperate
And all you want is to be [G]touched
[Bm]When you're so dry and your head is pounding
When your love becomes your [G]crutch
[D]When all your suffering
[A]And all your addictions [Em]kneel down at your [G]side
[D]When all that seemed mended [A]shows itself still broken
[Em]And you're feeling swallowed [G]alive
[Bm][Bm/A]Shake the [G]tree
[Bm][Bm/A]Shake the [G]tree
[Bm][Bm/A]Shake the [G]tree that sleeps in you
And [Em]breathes in me [G]
[D]One day your misfortune
Will shine like a [G]crown
[D]One day your misfortune
Will all crumble [G]down
If you'd just...
[Bm][Bm/A]Shake the [G]tree
[Bm][BM/A]Shake the [G]tree
[Bm][Bm/A]Shake the [G]tree that sleeps in you
And [Em]breathes in me
