I have been wandering the halls lately at my college
Going back to school at 35 is weird thing

I remember when I used to listen to music with a walkman
Now my ipod is my new best friend

In listening to Dear Lover, I was again reminded
of why I loved 'Concussion' so much

Happy Hour used to drown me instantly
Autopilot, Devastation...all of it

It is so nice to hear this CD
It seems to me, in my humble opinion,
to be a return to some place
I'm not even sure where that place was...or if I am even
close to being to right.

I just have to say that I'm so moved by this album
that I am telling anyone who will listen.

Thank You JDM

It's always a nerve-racking thing just before a new album comes out. I walk that line between serving the muse and wanting to communicate something important for YOU.

When I hear Dear Lover is connecting, it means the world to me.

Advocacy means everything, so please continue sharing your thoughts with everyone that will listen.

I was a member of the old forum but never rejoined when the site changed, just became a lurker. i just wanted to say that since my new join date makes it look like i am new to the music. i am not. i have all the diy releases and official releases. when my oldest daughter was trying to decide whether to give up the acoustic guitar in favor of electric i encouraged her to keep up with both and showed her the utube video of cars and history. she still plays acoustic.
there are a handfull of artists whose music has become part of the soundtrack of my life. Matthew is one of those artists. i found east autumn grin because of the people magazine review when it was released (yeah i read people sometimes) and have been a fan ever since. the new release is downloading as i type this and i will hear it tonight for the first time.
i remember the first time i heard concussion...put everybody to bed and listened with headphones.
cannot wait until later today for the first listen of Dear Lover.
thanks Matthew and keep it up man.

I just downloaded the new album. Not surprisingly it's fantastic. I first saw Matthew Ryan opening for another band about 12 years ago (actually it was November 11th I believe). I remember hearing "Irrelevant" and I immediately went to the merch table to buy "May Day". Since then I have had the pleasure of following Matthew Ryan's career.

His music has the ability to spark so many different emotions within me, and I feel more alive when I hear it. It makes me want to live more actively, and regret the times I have passively let time go by.

My musical tastes and personality have changed over the course of these 12 years and Matthew Ryan's music is the only music that has stayed with me. Other bands come and go, but none have evolved so much, yet held onto what makes them great like MR has.

Next week, 12 years after the first time I saw MR, I am driving 8 hours to Atlanta to see his show (one day after my birthday!) on the 20th. I am so glad he has continued to make music that is unique and emotive, and I hope to go to another MR show 12 years from now.

dear lover is awesome. plain & simple. mr. ryan doesn't really disappoint. ever. that's why we're here, i guess. i don't have a whole lot of fully formed thoughts on the current album, so i will post what i said elsewhere on the aquanet about from a late night highrise (it may or may not apply to the new album):

"as for my feelings about falnhr, i think it is great. a wonderful "winter" record. it feels cold & distant. even the cover art. the whole thing feels like slushy post-holidays sunday morning in january. you are beginning to escape the disappointments of xmas & new years, but it is still impossible to look forward to green grass & lilacs. "

(after reading it, it doesn't really apply to dear lover)

Myself got surprised again by the music of Matthew Ryan. Dear Lover it is a master piece of Ryan's music, the sound of this album takes me to a place where i can still feel sensations like new feelings, the experience of hearing such a noise is the unic moment where i can see new emotions playing with my memorys in a way that i had forgotten. But still there is that Void, when i was hearing "The End of a Story Ghost" it was incredible, but there was something that could not explode i mean the song in my opinion was loaded with feelings, sensations, emotions everything but i couldn't hear them, there was no explosion of those, is the only thing that i didn't like.It was like waiting for something that never happened. Anyway This Is What I Call New Sound, keep the good job i love your music.

Love the album especially We are Snowmen, Your Museum and End of a Ghost Story. The video is fantastic. I am originally from Canada and seeing Flat Matthew in a curling club is a hoot.
Thanks for it.
Hope to see you perform when you blow through Chicago.

I love the fact that I'm hearing more and more that Ryan grew up listening to the same stuff that I did. The electronic influence in this record takes me back to some of the great electronic music of the early 80's, like Joy Division, etc. God knows if MR was any other artist, folks would be mailing this disc back to him, crying about how he changed his sound and he's not supposed to be using so much synth music, yada yada yada, wah wah wah. I love it. It's adding such a diversity to the collective sound of his catalog and it makes me look forward to the next record already.

I agree. So many fans of other artists are upset when they "change" their sound, but this is what makes MR so great. He can have a song like Spark and a song like The World Is... on the same album. They are different in a sense but all of his music has a common thread that runs through it, which makes it familiar and unique all at once.

I'm kinda new to the Matthew Ryan party (first I consciously heard was Jane, I Still Feel the Same which Abe from 00:02:59 Records very kindly sent by way of unexpected compensation for a delay in the My Jerusalem EP release), so I'm not sure what a MR album should sound like.
Anyways, in short it's an album that has rekindled my love of music (a love which went somewhere awry this year due to, erm, things), so for that I'm grateful for Dear Lover's existence. Probably comes across as a bit mad for a first post, but there you go. Hi there.

I was born in the mid fifties and was fortunate to develop a love of music thanks to the Beatles Led Zep Deep purple, Yes, Pink Floyd etc in the 70's. My 3 favourite bands are Springsteen, U2 and Dave Matthews. Over the years my passion for music has not wained thanks to Coldplay, Elbow, Kings of Leon and Snow Patrol ( local boys from Northern ireland!) and I love discovering new music - Gaslight Anthem, Airborne Toxic event, Dan Arborise etc this year. However one constant over the past number of years has been Matthew Ryan. I first heard a track - Someone got Murdered on the Bob Harris BBC Radio show and have followed him ever since. This is his best album. It is rich in sound and full of wonderful lyrics and arrangements. Most important of all, the quality of the recording exposes the best thing about Matthew Ryan - his voice. Why he is not a huge international star is baffling. This record is not even available yet on Amazon in the UK - I had to download it from itunes. He needs a major profile projection. I really do believe that the music that is around now is as good as any period in the past 40 years. Song writers like Matthew Ryan enrich our lives so much and make the world a better place and we should all be very thankful for that. Very Happy Very Happy

I didn't let it being available only on iTunes ( I hate iTunes) stop me from getting Dear Lover (easy to order it right here on matthewryanonline ! fast as amazon, and doesn't it feel good to let the artist get supported for his work instead of all those endless f--kin' middlepeople?!), and I'm so glad I did!
It's devastatingly good. Took me a good while to really get it, because at first I had to resist it, it wasn't slicky-pretty-appealing, or ironic at all, it is sooo honest. I wasn't sure I was supposed to be hearing these songs, they felt meant for someone else, or meant to be kept private somehow. Of course not, I just had to listen to it myself first and cry without worrying about being seen in the act, and then I could really hear it, it's gorgeous.
I feel like I need to thank Matthew Ryan for sharing, it's beautiful, I can only hope it felt as rewarding (not quite the right word, but cathartic/cleansing isn't either, so I give up Wink ...there's lots of resignation and lots of loss and I hope I hope some relief at the expression of it?!, in there, I guess is what I'm trying to say...) to record as it is to listen to.
cheers all...

I can't stop hear Your Museum

It's so lovely
It's so deep
It's so soft
It's so harmony
It's in me when i sleep

YouTube shows you was in Cologne (Germany) in June 1998 at Rockpalast
Perhaps see and hear you and your Band in Germany soon with Your Museum
and all other Songs

Sabine
