Time and Time Only

Matthew Ryan

(Matthew Ryan)

From East Autumn Grin

transcribed by Ryan Humbert

Capo 2.....I also find that if you play it without a pic and use your finger
nail on your pointer finger as a pic it sounds alot like the cd.....make sure
to do a little picking and hammer on here and there. The song is basically
just three chords except the bridge......Great Song!!!!
Intro- Am, F, C 4x
Am F C
Your hair fell from you onto my forehead
And the light came through the shade and laid on the bed
My arms they wrestled your inventions
While my heart was still wrestling with my head
Yes my heart still wrestles with my head
Barefoot on the hardwood in the kitchen
Barefoot in the frontyard on the grass
The summer it is setting with its stitches
This love is stronger than any that has passed
CHORUS
But time and time only knows the answers
That time and time only can reveal
Yes time and time only knows the answers
That time and time only can steal
Yes time and time only can...steal
F D
But I'm not so sure of anything anymore
F G
No I'm not so sure of anything anymore
Am F C
Then the wind surrounded me and I surrendered
It was beautiful, it was vile and I bent
But when all the new familiars they had vanished
It was only you and your skin that was left
Yeh only you and your skin was left
Now the days they are unwinding like an alarm clock
And the drift it is as steady as it is strong
And that's me fumbling with the key to your padloc
And you knew it, ah, you knew it all along
Yeh I knew it, you knew it along
CHORUS 2x

The World Is On Fire
(Matthew Ryan)
from "East Autumn Grin"
tabbed by Mike Berry Mberry9@cs.com

Capo 1

[A]

There's always a story
A [E]story to tell
A [D]story to sell to the [A]news
A [A]sweet virgin princess
Gave [E]death in the bathroom
While her [D]boyfriend cleaned his [A]shoes

And [A]gin pushed a low-light
To [E]turn on his good wife
When he [D]stuck a knife in her [A]throat
And [A]coke loves the ratings
'Cause [E]you love the horror
As [D]long as it don't come [A]home

[D]Faith is [A]weak, she's [E]running out of [A]steam
(And) [D]fate is [A]tired, I'm so fed [E]up, you're all [A]fired
Oh, [D]America, you're [A]beautiful, yeah you're [E]beautiful
When you're [A]sleeping
[D]Lovers, you are [A]love, you are [E]loved
When you're [A]grieving

Now [A]I am a father
And [E]I am a brother
I've [D]tried and I'm trying [A]still
Why [A]life is so precious
But [E]piles like garbage
I [D]guess it's our passion that [A]kills

But [A]somewhere it's peaceful
And [E]morning is dawning
All [D]soft and warm in de[A]sire
But a [A]darkness is creeping
While the [E]news is spreading
And a[D]gain the world is on [A]fire

[D]Faith is [A]weak, she's [E]running out of [A]steam
(And) [D]fate is [A]tired, I'm so fed [E]up, you're all [A]fired
Oh, [D]America, you're [A]beautiful, yeah you're [E]beautiful
When you're [A]sleeping
[D]Lovers, you are [A]love, you are [E]loved
When you're [A]grieving

[D] [A] [E] [A] x end on [A]

I have some corrections for the posted version of this song.
Basically rather than G-C-G-C, i'm pretty sure it's G-C-Em-C, which is repeated throughout the entire song.

Capo 1st fret

In the [G]house of the lie we were [C]living,
You lost your [Em]tongue, and in my touch I lost all [C]feeling

I saw the sun falling small on your shoulder
I lit your smoke, we barely spoke, the days got colder

I took my things to a flat in the suburbs
I put your ring in the folds of a long verse

Now your blue scarf, your green eyes, the great sadness
They often dwell, recall, and swell a wild tempest

Chorus
I can't [G]hold you, but I'm still [C]kissing you
I don't [Em]want to, but I'm still [C]missing you

[G]Still, [C]still
I carry [Em]you still, I guess I always [C]will

In these hours that unwind with such effort
Amid this hoax that swirls and floats on the weather

Some hearts get numb 'til they become frozen hopeless
But this I swear, I will live there beyond this slowness

I feel my sleep on the verge of some bright dream
Where all is well, and cherry light warms a dark street

There your hand will fall to mine, safe with comfort
And there your lips will rise to me 'til they whisper

Chorus

end on [G]

Worry
(Matthew Ryan)
from Matthew Ryan’s “East Autumn Grin”
tabbed by Mike Berry Mberry9@cs.com

OK…here goes…it’s a piano tune, and I may have mangled this in attempting to make it guitar accessible. Anyway…you’d have to do a drop D tuning if you want to get the nice bass notes like on the CD……if you do the drop D tuning (where the 6th string is tuned down to a D note), then the [D] chords are played as 0xx232, and the [E] is played as 222100 (I repeat, the 6th string is tuned down to D if you’re playing it this way). It’s easier to play with conventional tuning, and just do something like hum the nice bass note, or get a cellist to hit it for you. A beautiful song. If Matthew happens by here, I invite him to correct any and all errors in my tabs.

[A] [D] [A] x 2

Everything’s [A]fine [D][A]
Everything is [F#m]good [D][F#m]
Everything’s [Bm]going[Bm/A][E]
Like I always wished it [A]would [A/F#][A/G#][A]

Down on you’re [A]luck [D][A]
Not down on your [F#m]knees [D][F#m]
What feels [Bm]eternal [Bm/A][E]
Is only a [A]breeze [A/F#][A/G#][A]

[D]One day you’ll a[A]wake
[D]And the frost will have [A]thawed
[D]Your heart won’t feel [A]heavy
[B]Your worry [A]small [E]
Baby don’t [A]cry [D][A]
Don’t bother to [F#m]cry [D][F#m]
It ain’t worth the [Bm]living [Bm/A][E]
If it ain’t worth the [A]lie [A/F#][A/G#][A]

‘Cause everything’s [A]fine [D][A]
Everything is [F#m]good [D][F#m]
Everything’s [Bm]going [Bm/A][E]
Like I always wished it [A]would [A/F#] [A/G#] [A]

August Summer Dress

Matthew Ryan

Matthew Ryan's "East Autumn Grin"

transcribed by Mike Berry

From the website AltCountryTab.com
which can be found at http://web.archive.org/web/20030413204613/http://www.altcountrytab.com/
This is my take on Matthew Ryan's "bonus track" from East Autumn Grin.
This is a stripped down version…there's lots of bass stuff going on I
haven't addressed. And a few of the words are questionable. Any assistance is appreciated.
[C] [F] [C] [F]
All the [C]sickness and the forge
And all that's come un[F]wound
Under the [C]clock by the casino
Outside the lost and [F]found
Where you [C]spoke in some strange accent
While I just zipped my [F]coat
For a [C]walk down through the graveyard
All I wish I didn't [F]know
I wish I'd never [C]known [F]
There's no [C]telephone ringing
There's no postcards to [F]send
It's [C]not like before
When I torched the flag of con[F]tempt
Still you re[C]mind me of a girl
That always felt too [F]deep
In the [C]stagger and the flail
Of blurred vision and memory[F]
Well a [Am]promise that is [G]wounded
Is a [F]promise nonethe[C]less
I only wanted you for[G]ever
In that [F]August summer [C]dress [F]

All the [C]courage and the fear
Lord, they're so en[F]twined
Like the [C]polished steel of coffins
And the swollen breast of [F]time
All I'm [C]offering is a gold band
But it means so much [F]more
Like a [C]heart to religion
Or stilts to the [F]floor
It means so much [C]more [F]
Well a [Am]promise that is [G]wounded
Is a [F]promise nonethe[C]less
I only wanted you for[G]ever
In that [F]August summer [C]dress
[Am] [G] [F] [C] [G] [F] [C] [F]….to fade
